Abstract
Fuzzy Sets allow for the handling of unceratinty and vagueness and have been applied to a wide variety of problems. Fuzzy Inferencing Systems (FIS) allow for the use of fuzzy sets to draw conclusions and make decisions. There are a wide variety of issues that need to be considered by a FIS developer - determining membership functions, generating rules, composing rules and defuzzification. This paper reviews the issues and some of the methods that have been adopted to assist. Most of the approaches have been domain specific and applied to small problems. Further research is required into all these areas to help in the development of FIS.

Key words: fuzzy logic, inferencing, membership functions
