If the digital network is truly integrated, it shouldn't care what you send to it, ie just as you can connect a phone to the network for telephone conversations, you should be able to directly connect a data terminal - or a combined voice and data terminal.
BT (and a number of other PTTs) are experimenting with such a direct connection. They provide a communications channel with adequate capacity to connect a telephone and data terminal.
