My Favourite Reviewers' Comments:

·         "Overall: I think it needs a LOT of work before it would approach the standard required by EJIS. It seems haphazard to me. The evidence has all the hallmarks of hasty writing and needs to be presented much more systematically" European Journal of Information Systems. Title of the paper: Focus Groups and Critical Social IS Research: How the Choice of Method Can Promote Emancipation of Respondents and Researchers, co-authored with Cindy LeRouge and Monica Tremblay

·         "What an interesting rant and polemic." ("Responsible Management of Digital Divides: An oxymoronic endeavour?"; IFIP WG 8.2 'Social Inclusion: Societal & Organizational Implications for Information Systems', Limerick, Ireland, July 12-15, 2006)

·         "certainly in parts funny to read, but scientifically not a serious contribution" ("The Influence of Realist Ontology on Technological Projects: The Case of Irish Electronic Voting" presented at  the Second Workshop on Philosophy and Informatics (WSPI 2005), 10.-13. April 2005, Kaiserslautern, Germany)

·         "I not only encourage the editors to reject the paper, but I also implore the authors to suspend their publication prospects, spend some time in Egypt themselves, and learn what is really happening there. This is one case where arm-chair philosophizing is not helping IS scholars to understand a phenomenon." ("Information Systems as Means of (Dis)Empowerment: The Information Society and Decision Support Systems in Local Authorities in Egypt", co-authored with Ibrahim El-Beltagi and Neil McBride, rejected from MIS Quarterly, Special Issue on Information Systems in Developing Countries)

·         "[...] the introductory section of the paper is messy" (reviewer 103) "The introduction in interesting - and wonderfully brief while being informative (congratulations!) [...]" (reviewer 102) ("The Ethical Nature of Critical Research in Information Systems" submitted to the Special Issue on Critical Research in Information Systems of the Information Systems Journal)

My Favourite Rejection Poem

The Rejected Paper

Further to your submission of manuscript 09-07-0035-17D-R

We have to reject it. The conclusions stink

like putrid flesh, like unemptied bins

frequented by rats and vermin.

You failed to cite important work,

the assured foundations of our discipline,

the plenary speakers, chairs of conferences

whose work features in discussions in the bar.

If you had frequented the lobbies,

nodded appropriately at seminars,

applauded learned theory and

sat next to the professor on the bus to the brewery

you might have understood the importance

of adding you voice to the orthodoxy

and the objectivity

determined by our community.

Neil McBride   29/02/08 (written on the occasion of the initial rejection of our co-authored paper on critical lexicography from the Journal of IS in Developing Countries)
