Some sources of funding available to postgraduates are
Career Development Loans
The most popular source of funding for postgraduate students is the Career Development Loan (CDL) scheme administered by Barclays, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Co-operative Bank and Clydesdale Bank in partnership with the DfES. CDLs enable students to borrow up to 80% of course fees and, for full-time students, the cost of books, materials and other related expenses including travel, child care and disability costs, up to £8000. You make no repayment during the course and up to one month afterwards, up to six months if you are unemployed - the DfES pays the interest during that period. You can get a detailed CDL brochure by calling their freephone number, 0870 000 2288(DfES).
Research Councils
A limited number of Research Scholarships and Research Council Studentships linked to specific topics are advertised nationally. Deadlines for nominations are usually between April and July. Contact via the Joint Research Councils website www.research-councils.ac.uk or go to www.hero.ac.uk.
