Opportunities Available

As a postgraduate, studying for a research degree in the School of Computing Sciences, you will have the opportunity of working on an exciting and challenging problem at the frontier of knowledge. Under the guidance of a team of supervisors you will be encouraged to develop your technical skills and your powers of critical analysis and independent thought.

Entry Qualifications


You will normally be expected to have obtained a good honours degree (1st or 2nd class) in a subject relevant to your proposed research area.

Training and Support


All full-time research students are required to attend a Research Methods Course during their first year. In addition you will be able to attend a selection of modules chosen from the portfolio of taught masters programmes. These will be selected in consultation with your supervisors dependent upon your existing knowledge and your individual research topic.

You will have regular meetings with your team of supervisors and be encouraged to prepare short working papers and technical reports on your work. You will of course be given useful feedback on both the technical content and presentation of such papers. More formal feedback on your progress will be provided via the School's Research Committee on a semester basis.

The School has excellent links with both industry and public bodies so that many of the research topics are related to a particular applications problem. A number of research groups operate in the School and these provide a further focus for research activity
