Ingres Trainer

This trainer has been developed over a number of years by: Jon Bennett, Mike Leigh, Terry Sherwood, Nigel Roberts, and (I think) Ann Abraham. It has been brought on-line and suitably embelished with hyper-texty gee-whiz gimmicks by John Skelton.

Note:
This page and related Ingres pages are still under development. Please note that contents will change over time. This trainer is intended to be used in conjunction with certain Ingres manuals. At the Leicester site these manuals are obtainable from the technician librarianin W5.18. The manuals you need are:

  1. "Ingres Thru Forms and Menus" Part 1 & Part 2.
  2. "Introducing Ingres"
  3. "SQL Reference Manual"

This trainer consists of portions of descriptive text followed by exercises. You should read the descriptive text without trying to perform operations on Ingres. Only perform operations with Ingres as part of the exercises.

Computer Science Year 2

We are doing a couple of things differently or additionally to the information in the trainer.
  1. We're going to use a database called c95 instead of student. Everywhere you see student, replace it with c95
  2. From the DEC lab we're using you need to enter the command
    rlogin inghost
    from your ingterm.

  7. There is also a trainer which has been developed at the University of Lancaster if you want to have a look at it, it is here.
To my eyes it seems to be more of an online manual than a trainer - but that's only my opinion.
I'd very much like to get feedback from students who use both this trainer and the Lancaster one. I don't mind if you didn't like bits of this one so long as you an give specific pointers on how to improve it.
